Welcome to Wilbur!Imagine a school where all students and staff are eager for the week to begin, parents unselfishly volunteer their time and money, and the community partners willingly support our school. Our non-profit parent organization, (Friends of Wilbur) has contributed to our beautification with outdoor learning classrooms/landscape gardens, murals, grassy play areas, and a top of the line computer lab. In addition, each classroom is equipped with an Interactive White Board, our yard has play structures that keep our children fit, our children use an upgraded, library with current books, and we have a science lab and art room. Welcome to Wilbur Avenue Elementary School, located in beautiful Tarzana, a suburban community. The school opened its doors in 1959 and is built on a solid academic curriculum, encouraging the growth of the whole child, and a reputation for excellence. Wilbur has established itself as a high achieving school with academic excellence. Our API scores are consistently rising. In fact, our scores have been consistently on the rise. This is the direct result of concerted efforts of a committed staff, determined students and involved parent community. Our incredible staff includes 5 staff development trainers, 2 BTSA support providers, 2 National Board Teachers, and 1 grant writer whose efforts have funded programs that complement our standards-based curriculum. Currently, three of our wonderful teachers are working towards their National Board Certification. Wilbur is a California Distinguished School due to the joint efforts of our Administrators, Teachers and Parents. Of course, we couldn't have done it without our students who work so hard. Our parents devote thousands of hours through volunteering and running many of the committees that has made us a great school. The 4th and 5th grade parents sponsor overnight field trips to Catalina, Gem-O-Rama, Astro Camp and a 5th Grade Camping Trip. Many of our parents volunteer as P.E. coaches, Library Readers, and classroom volunteers. The parent organization, Friends of Wilbur, encourages potential parents to visit and experience the Wilbur spirit. We have approximately six parent tours a year. Many of our events like Pajamarama, Open House, Pancake Breakfast, Wacky Wilbur Luau, and our annual Wilbur Dinner Auction are community events. Wilbur has a diverse afterschool enrichment program that includes a performing arts component consisting of dance, art and play production that has been acknowledged by the Daily News and other local newspapers for an outstanding job. We have performed Annie, Young America Sings, School House Rocks, Evolution of Rock and Broadway Magic at the theater located at California State University, Northridge. This collaboration and financial support from our neighborhood has brought back many of the students from the surrounding community. We believe when parents and community become collaborative partners in their children’s education, the results will speak for themselves. Wilbur encourages visitors to experience a firsthand look at our fabulous school and we look forward to sharing our successes with all stakeholders. We at Wilbur are lucky enough to have two great parents who wrote a wonderful, energetic song that we sing at all events. In case you don't have it, download a copy to share with your kids. You can learn it together! |
